Environment

We have implemented various initiatives and efforts to be closer to achieving its goal of being more responsible for the environment. We are taking initiatives to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, optimise energy consumption, recycle water and effectively manage waste and effluents, while constantly sourcing for sustainable and alternative raw materials to reduce the impact on the environment. We also recognise the importance of protecting biodiversity and ecosystems in the areas around the Group’s operating sites. We are committed to producing quality products while continuously striving to preserve and minimise the impacts on the environment through the following initiatives:

- Minimising pollution and reducing Greenhouse Gas (“GHG”) emissions
- Using raw materials, natural resources, and energy efficiently and sustainably
- Ensuring proper waste management and responsible disposal or efficient reuse
- Conserving biodiversity for current and future generations
- Reducing single-use plastics

Energy Consumption

HCIB’s operations rely on three primary sources of energy. The most common source is fossil fuels, particularly coal. These are used as the primary heat source in cement kilns, where they provide the high temperatures needed for the clinker manufacturing process. In recent years, HCIB has also begun exploring alternative fuel sources to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. At the moment, however, alternative fuel sources cannot totally replace traditional fossil fuels and are used in combination with them.

HCMT is a member of C&CA

Hume Cement (HCMT) is a member of the Cement & Concrete Association of Malaysia (C&CA). Under the environment pillar, C&CA emphasizes Low Carbon Cement. This initiative aims to construct buildings that are strong, safe, and durable using more environmentally friendly cement and concrete products. C&CA encourages its members to reduce energy consumption, switch to cleaner fuels, and use alternative materials instead of traditional ones. These efforts help make the construction industry more eco-friendly.

HCMT is aligned to this aspiration and continuously works to improve our processes to produce low-carbon cement by using alternative fuels and implementing energy efficiency measures.
